How it works

How it works

From thousands of public posts a day to what Syrians feel and talk about, set against the media, in six steps.

  1. 1. Collect

Every few hours the tracker reads public posts and comments about Syria from 48 sources: Telegram channels, YouTube comments, Bluesky, Reddit and news sites, in Arabic, Kurdish and English.

2,140 posts collected in the last update

  2. 2. Sort

Old, off-topic and repeated posts are set aside. The rest are sorted into ordinary people's posts and comments, and outlets' posts, and a sample of up to 800 goes to the analysis, mostly people's.

    1,338 relevant · 573 from people · 240 from outlets

  3. 3. Group into stories

An AI model (Claude) groups the posts into stories: what happened, and what people say about it. Each story has its own page that follows it over time.

    10 stories right now

  4. 4. Mood gap

For each story the model reads the mood of people's reactions and the tone of each kind of outlet, from negative to positive, and sets them side by side.

Right now: people mostly neutral, outlets mostly neutral

  5. 5. Topic gap

What people talk about is set against what Syrian and international media, think tanks and international organisations report, area by area.

Share of attention over the past week

  6. 6. Publish

Everything becomes a daily, weekly and monthly report with a PDF, posts on Facebook and X, and open data anyone can download and reuse.

Free and open, in Arabic and English

It shows what is said, not what is true. It is not a survey: people who post online are not a sample of all Syrians, and connected people and the diaspora are over-represented. Individuals are never named, quoted or linked.
